Ask not IF, but HOW

Ahhh... the pursuit of the perfect shot! This is the kind of creativity we still need. Imagine using our 2010 technology with a 1948 state of mind...where could we go creatively? These days, technology in post can become a creative crutch....reach beyond it and think about how and why some things work when you are on a shoot. Think outside the box. Think not about IF you can get the shot, but HOW you WILL get the shot. There is always a way.

This photo is from Amanda Emily's post at:
http://www.feedingthebeast.info/2010/03/bowling-for-b-roll/

In 1948, Norman Alley was asked to obtain footage of a bowling ball rolling down a lane for a story.

Not to be deterred from a chance at a creative angle, Alley tied his DeVry to a broom, wound it up and went chasing the ball down the lane.

BTW, this state of mind can be applied in other aspects of your life...not just photography. Check out the view from a different angle, Live Creatively, and Make Things Happen!

Update: I found the photo in the original Pop-Sci article from June 1948 HERE.

Well, I had abandoned this blog for a while because I went to work for the FOX affiliate in Nashville. They frown on the posting of your news stories or publishing anything relating to your job. Well, I am now leaving news and going to work for financial guy Dave Ramsey as a video specialist on his in-house production team. So let the blogging begin :-)

The following is a revelation I had today. The info is Biblically based... and the concept just works.

Romans 4:17 (New International Version)

As it is written: " 'I have made you a father of many nations.' He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were."

Calling things that are not as though they were. I have read this many times over the years as a Christian. I never fully realized, however, the sheer enabling power in this one simple statement. As a Christian, I am called to be more Christ-like… but I have not always applied the statement above to my life.

God gave us this statement as an example of how we should run our lives. Abraham became the father of many nations even though it seemed impossible. God, on the other hand, knew from the beginning the outcome.

The simple act of “calling things that are not as though they were” is God’s way of giving us the ability to overcome all obstacles that block our path. Following this advice WILL open up a new path… even a better one.

F.W. Woolworth, Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, and many others all followed this principle. They knew what they would accomplish before it existed. They did not become successful after they built their empires, they became successful the moment they called their future into existence. They “called those things that are not as though they were!”

This is not about riches; this is about success and achieving your dreams. The society we live in today is geared toward failure. Many people want the government to “bail them out.” True success, however, lies in your God given ability to “call things that are not as though they were.” We can’t expect others to pull us out of trouble or failure…. We need to use our minds and see the success hidden in the failure. We were designed as creatures of great ability! We were designed in the image of God! Yet society today says that we need everything to be done for us. "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country” is no longer the American way. Many American today are asking “What can my country do for me?”

The answer to our problems… be it lack of success, sickness, or any number of things could be cured just by following God’s example with Abraham. Call those things that are not as though they were. You will be successful because that is just how it is, you will not be sick because you already know you are healthy, you WILL see your dreams come to pass.

When you know the outcome… you know that your only option is to get there. Call those things that are not as though they were and then you will know the outcome. This simple statement by God gives us a map to our success and dreams. This simple statement ELIMINATES the victim mentality of so many today. This simple statement is a key to achieving the dreams that God has placed in us.

Don’t sit there and wonder why others around you have achieved great things any you have not… don’t fall in to a trap of jealousy… don’t wait for someone to hand you success… Just “call things that are not as though they were” and you will see your desire come to pass.

Crime....Why?

I'm getting tired of shooting flowers, wreaths and candles in front of businesses. In the past month we have had 2 deadly market shootings and in the past week 2 murders at restaurants.

Today I covered the murder of an 18 year old employee (Josh Cole) and 33 year old manager (Chris Caris) at Bellacino's on White Bridge Road in Nashville. The sad part about this is that the "robbery" now appears to be an "execution." A former employee (fired for stealing money) is now the main suspect for the "execution style" deaths of the 2 sandwich shop workers. The accused is 21 year old Jason Bobo.
The family of Josh was VERY nice and you can tell they were all close. The outpouring for Josh was amazing and everyone loved him. I can honestly say that in the 8 years of TV news I have done...I have not shot more touching and emotional video than on this story...and it all comes back to everyone's love for Josh. It is clear from both the community, and police that there was NO reason for the murder.
Now I grew up in this town...and stories like this were few and far between. But they are beginning to become more commonplace. It seems like every week we are covering a shooting in a business or a funeral of a shooting victim. I wish I could say I have the answer...but I'm afraid it is just part of the end times. I have noticed (over the years) since my childhood... that morals have morphed from societal absolutes to personal preference. There seems to be a moral relativism in the world. If you are against someone's behavior and vocal about it...then you are considered a purveyor of hate speech. Certain things once forbidden are now encouraged and the moral line keeps moving further and further away. Moral is now "what is right for you."
So I'm afraid that the forces pushing the moral line have now created a monster. We have generations of kids growing up not being taught right from wrong...because there is no wrong!
If someone thinks what you are doing is wrong...then take offense! They must hate you for some reason!
You see... in one example of the recent killings, a teenager came back and shot a store owner after the teen was stopped from shoplifting. In the most recent event... the suspect it seems came back for revenge after being fired for stealing money.
"How dare you tell me I can't steal! It is my right and if you don't like it then you are a bigot!"
That is the attitude of many of today's youth. And now it is turning into "How dare you tell me I can't kill!"
Hmmmm. Stealing...Killing... I know where those things are listed.

The 10 Commandments!

But you know something. I think the 10 commandments have been taken out of our classrooms and out of our public buildings.

You see ... in the name of tolerance... our nation has become intolerant of Christian principles. Everything is ok to do or believe in... unless it involves Christ. And why? Christ was the most loving and non-violent person in history. Heck, He DIED on the cross for our salvation and healing! How is that dangerous to society? Our free speech as turned into free speech (except for Christians). Public Muslim schools? They are allowed... but not Public Christian schools?
You see where I am going?
Near the end "even the elect if possible will be deceived." We are being fed poison by society and buying in to it. When we throw away our morals... we throw away our freedom. We come that much closer to welcoming a police state. You think I'm kidding? Well when a certain percentage of society sees no reason not to steal, kill or whatever...then how will order be restored? We are turning over our country and don't even realize it.
The bible says that Satan has come to "steal, kill and destroy"...but Jesus "gives life" and he gives it more abundantly." When you let Jesus into your heart, you are freed from the shackles of sin. True Christians aren't close minded... we just see the light and feel the freedom in Christ. It is painful to see the world turning into what it is. As a Christian you are in this world...but not of this world. You are to be a light for all to see.
Remember that the basis of Christianity is love... when you deny Christ...you deny love. What is left in the absence of love? HATE. So the very thing that so many people are trying to avoid by turning to every thing but Christ...could be avoided just by accepting Him. Ironic...isn't it.
So as society spirals (and I shoot it through the lens of my news camera), I can only try to be a light for those left hurting. My identity is not what I do, or who I know, or my sexuality, or my financial status... my Identity is Christ. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. When He is your identity... guess what... you can't be offended! You can be concerned and hurt about the chaos you see around you... but you can't be offended. You can shine...and possibly be used by Him to bring some peace to this fallen world while at the same time having peace in your heart because you know that you know that you know that you feel the love of Jesus every day and night.

So I guess that Jesus is the only solution. The robberies, murders and juvenile crime....a by product of what society has molded into. Break the mold...accept Christ... He is your ONLY hope. "You will live forever if you soften your heart." He is knocking at your door...let Him in...you will feel a greater love than you have ever felt before.

Drink plenty of water.

Attention all news photogs! I don't know how hot it is in your market.. but in Nashville... IT IS HOT! We are in our second day of 100+ temps. I felt it today :-)...running around with a news camera and doing a story on the heat. The Nashville school system has actually suspended all outdoor sports practice for the week. Anyway... I neglected to bring water with me today and in the process I think I managed to drink every sugary icy drink I could find in between shoots. I started off with a Jumbo ICEE from Exxon...but I didn't quit there. The reporter had the great idea of going to Wendy's for large ice cream floats! ...STRIKE 2! I was so into sugar by this time that I was craving a slush from Dairy Queen. I knew we had to get one more temperature display... so I suggested one on West End (also happens to be where the only Dairy Queen near downtown is). So strike 3 was a LARGE cherry slushee. I have not had this much sugar in months!
Back to the water... I'm buying a case at Costco tomorrow....and a cooler. Now I will stay hydrated and won't have an excuse to seek out cold sugary drinks to bring down my core temperature.
Your sweaty photog,
Cam

Our New 12 inch Photog

Well, the new guy showed up today. He is a bit smaller than the rest of us...but we are trying to help him out. I don't know his full name yet...but he goes by "Tivo." As you can see, he got a little boost from a cubicle while working with Larry Flowers today.

As you can see...he uses a smaller camera as well (parked between the 2 DVCPros at the right). It looks just like the rest of our cameras... there is no way he could use one our size. One thing comes to mind...If he can get a Pro Camera that small...why are all the one man band "VJs" across town not using them?

Jason...one of our full size photogs...tried Tivo's camera out. Jason says that it is not the most ergonomic thing he has used...and it is hard to focus. "All the buttons are in the right place, but my fingers are to big to switch them." Jason said.

Tivo can't wait to start driving here in Nashville. The chief photog is going to take him to Toy's R' Us this week to see if the station can find a car to fit him.

I'll keep you all informed of Tivo's progress at the station after he has had some time to settle in.

My Freshly Emblazoned Car

Here are the pics I promised. To the car's credit...I actually did get an exclusive news tip because someone saw me in the car. So I will just focus on the plusses of driving a marked car.

This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

So BE HAPPY...the small stuff dosen't matter :-)

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

So.... fellow news photogs! The consider the day in and day out trials of the biz....JOY! Every experience develops perseverance...and a lesson you learn from a bad experience you have now may save your butt in the future. So be glad in all things...your body will thank you for it.
