The Mystery Box

Following in the spirit of creative thought... I found this TED talk by JJ Abrams last night. JJ embraces technology, but I found it interesting that he still uses "old school" techniques to overcome obstacles in the field. Learn why things work and how to creatively use them.

What is your "mystery box?"

Ask not IF, but HOW

Ahhh... the pursuit of the perfect shot! This is the kind of creativity we still need. Imagine using our 2010 technology with a 1948 state of mind...where could we go creatively? These days, technology in post can become a creative crutch....reach beyond it and think about how and why some things work when you are on a shoot. Think outside the box. Think not about IF you can get the shot, but HOW you WILL get the shot. There is always a way.

This photo is from Amanda Emily's post at:

In 1948, Norman Alley was asked to obtain footage of a bowling ball rolling down a lane for a story.

Not to be deterred from a chance at a creative angle, Alley tied his DeVry to a broom, wound it up and went chasing the ball down the lane.

BTW, this state of mind can be applied in other aspects of your life...not just photography. Check out the view from a different angle, Live Creatively, and Make Things Happen!

Update: I found the photo in the original Pop-Sci article from June 1948 HERE.
